The values of Taekwondo, the 5 Tenets
Tenet #1
Etiquette (Ye Ui / 예의)
This tenet emphasizes politeness and respect towards others, both inside and outside the dojang (training hall). It includes adhering to etiquette, respecting instructors and seniors, showing kindness to juniors, and generally behaving in a considerate and respectful manner in all interactions. It's about recognizing the value and dignity of others.

Modesty (Gyeomson / 겸손)
This represents having a humble view of one's own skills and accomplishments, avoiding arrogance or boastfulness. It involves respecting others, acknowledging that there is always more to learn, and maintaining humility both inside and outside the dojang.

Perseverance (In Nae / 인내)
This tenet highlights the importance of persistence and determination in the face of challenges. Taekwondo training requires practitioners to overcome difficulties, endure hardship, and continuously strive towards their goals (like mastering a technique or achieving a higher rank). Perseverance means not giving up easily and pushing through obstacles with patience and resolve.

Self-Control (Guk Gi / 극기)
Self-control involves mastering one's thoughts, emotions, and actions. In Taekwondo, this applies both physically (controlling movements during techniques and sparring) and mentally/emotionally (managing anger, fear, or frustration). It extends beyond the dojang into everyday life, promoting discipline, restraint, and thoughtful decision-making rather than impulsive reactions.

Indomitable Spirit (Baekjeol Bulgul / 백절불굴)
This refers to having courage and resilience, especially when facing injustice or overwhelming odds. An indomitable spirit means standing up for what is right, facing adversity without being easily discouraged, and maintaining a positive and unconquerable attitude. It embodies the spirit of a true martial artist who is unshakable in their principles and courageous in action.
